May 2012
WELCOME to the website for Southlands Methodist Church in the historic city of York.
We believe we have a special calling to work in the community in which we are set and this includes actively witnessing for our Lord and maintaining an active programme of work with children and young people (see under "Children and Youth") and young adults as well as with older people in the area (see under "Church Groups").
The next Messy Church (a joint project in this area with St Chad's) will be at Southlands on Saturday, 23rd June, from 15:00 to 17:00. There will be lots of hands-on activities, including various crafts. Food is also provided, and there is no charge. So come and join us and see what the mess is all about.
Southlands and St Chad's congregations also worship together from time to time and the picture on this page shows the joint congregation assembling on the pavement beside the Methodist Church on 1st April, 2012, for a Palm Sunday procession to St Chad's where the service begun at Southlands finished with the Eucharist and the distribution of palm crosses (see further pictures under drop-down menu Photos).
A very successful Easter kids event was held at Southlands over the Easter weekend and a selection of pictures can also be found under drop-down menu Photos. There will be another kids event at Southlands during the half-term break - on Thursday, 7th June, from 14: to 17:30.
Mission Statement
Empowered by God's Spirit, our mission is to demonstrate our love for God through Jesus Christ, our love for each other and God's love for the world.
Our church
At first sight our premises are typical of those built in the Victorian era, but we have a modern, welcoming worship centre, a useful suite of meeting rooms and a community centre which is home to most of our work with children and young people.
You may be a visitor looking for a church in which to worship or you may be a resident looking for a church which meets your needs. Either way you will find a warm welcome at Southlands.
Our minister
Our minister, the Rev Jennifer McKenzie, is also superintendent of the York South Circuit, but she has accepted an invitation to become superintendent of the Bolton Circuit from September 2012, although this is subject to final approval by Methodist Conference.
Worship
Sunday services normally take place at 10:30 and 18:30 but there will be no evening service at Southlands on 6th May as we will be at a circuit service at West Thorpe instead.
Our morning service on Pentecost Sunday (27th May) will be an All Age Worship and Parade Service being led by our Children and Families Worker. There will be no evening service at Southlands that day, as we are encouraging our congregation to support the One Voice ecumenical Pentecost Celebration at York Minster at 18:30 which will also include the launch of More Than Gold York.
We are part of the York South Circuit, and services at Southlands are led by our own minister, and other ministers and local preachers appointed to preach the Gospel of Christ.

Updates on this website
Major updates of this website usually take place on or about the first Sunday of the month to coincide with publication of OUTLOOK, our church magazine. The magazine gives news and information about what is going on at Southlands, and in the York South Circuit to which this church belongs. Pdf versions of pages from the May issue of the magazine can be viewed on this website under "News".
