Students

What's here for students?

STUDENTS have always received a warm welcome at Southlands, whether they be at York College for Law, the University of York or the University of York St John.

There is a lot of student accommodation in the area around the church so it is a convenient church at which to worship.

We are a very friendly church and there’s a lot going on.

Young adults group

We have a very active young adults group called FLAME, which meets on Tuesday evenings through much of the year, for Bible study.

The group also arranges a number of social activities during the course of the year.

At times it also helps to lead worship in the church.

Badminton Club

We also have our own badminton club on Monday evenings during term time. This is a mixed age range facility and the fees are very reasonable.

Volunteering opportunities

For those who want to get involved in the life and witness of the church there are a number of volunteering opportunities ...

l Southlands Junior Club – You might want to work with children of junior school age through our Junior Club which offers a combination of organised games, craftwork, Bible teaching and free time on Friday evenings.

l Southlands Dramadaries – In this group, which offers a combination of organised games, activities, drama, and free time, you would be working with young people in School Years 7, 8 and 9, later on Friday evenings.

l Southlands Youth Club – It is hoped in the near future to restart our Youth Club on Thursday evenings and here you would be working with young people aged 14 and above.

l Southlands Young Church – There are also opportunities to join a rota to help lead different age groups in Young Church on Sunday mornings.

l Messy Church – We are working with St Chad’s Church to lay on Messy Church once a month from October onwards on Saturdays from 16:00 to 18:00, as a joint project alternating between the two churches. The last Messy Church event in October attracted 130 people of all ages. The next - at Southlands from 14:00 to 16:00 on Tuesday, 20th December - will be a Messy Christmas

l Uniformed groups – there are also opportunities to work with uniformed groups … Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, or Cub Scouts.

Music

There are opportunities for talented young musicians to assist in worship either as a group or, in the case of pianists and organists, on a rota. A really good pianist or organist could command a fee.
