Other regular weekly groups
|
Other groups meeting weekly SOUTHLANDS is engaged in a wide range of work with children and young people. Gradually we will create a number of individual pages to describe more fully what is going on here. But in the meantime some details of the different groups are set out here. Sunday Creche The Creche meets upstairs while worship takes place in the church, from 10:30 on Sundays. Young Church The Young Church groups meet in rooms upstairs from 10:30 on Sundays and the children join the adult congregation in church at about 11:15 as young and old share something of what they have been doing or hearing about in the preceding 45 minutes. On the last Sunday of the month there are usually no separate groups as Morning Worship is replaced by All Age Worship, often led by the worship group. In alternate months this service is also a Parade Service for the uniformed groups. The next All Age Worship service and Parade Service will take place on Sunday, 29th January, at 10:30. Parent and Toddler Group The church runs a very popular Parent and Toddler Group in the Community Centre on Wednesdays during term time from 10:00 to 11:45 with options for craft work or painting at the beginning, and music and singing near the end of the morning. There is also a huge range of toys and playthings available for the children to use and part way through the morning drinks and fruit are served for youngsters and parents. The cost each Wednesday is £1 per family. For further information contact Wyn Lawrence (tel 01904 639231). Rainbows This is the uniformed group for girls who are at infant school. The group meets in the community centre on Mondays during term time from 17:00 to 18:00, and there are some vacancies at the present time. For further information, contact Debbie Hunter (tel 01904 705703). Brownies This uniformed group, which like the Rainbows is part of the Guide movement, meets in the community centre on Tuesdays in term time from 18:30 to 20:00. Evenings include activities, and games, and in addition there are occasional weekend outings and camps. They recently held an African evening when the girls were able to have a go with different drums, try on African costumes and have a go at some African dances. For further information, contact Julie Moore (tel 01904 626354). Guides The Guides at Southlands meet in the community centre on Wednesdays in term time from 19:00 to 21:00, planning their own programme of activities, events and outings. During the last summer holidays the Guides went camping at Carlton Lodge, near Thirsk. Quad biking was part of the programme for their camping holiday. In 2013 they are planning to be at The Poacher International Camp on the Lincolnshire Showground. For further information, contact Diane Main (tel 07932 688255). Cub Scouts A number of girls have joined the boys in the Cub Scout pack which meets in the community centre on Thursdays, in term time, from 18:30 to 20:00.
