Church groups general

Activities on offer THE church caters for a wide variety of tastes through the various groups it runs at Southlands and gradually this page will be split into a series of pages giving more details about our groups and what goes on. Badminton Club The Badminton Club reopens on 9th January after the Christmas break. It attracts some good numbers, meeting in the Community Centre on Mondays from 19:30. Members pay 50p a time to come. Banner Group The Banner Group meets fortnightly on Thursdays from 10:00 and helps to inspire our worship through the banners and lectern falls it produces, though currently it is looking for new members - both needleworkers and designers. Bible study See separate page for Bible study groups and resources. Film Club The Film Club arranges film shows in the church on occasional Saturday afternoons or evenings, depending on whether they are for children or adults. Prayer Concern is a half-hour meeting for prayer which takes place nearly every week on Wednesday from 10:00, using Room 1 at the church. In addition, members of our congregation are encouraged to use the Methodist Prayer Handbook, which can be purchased from Mary Shaw. We also produce a monthly prayer calendar which is given out with the church notice sheet on the last Sunday of the preceding month. We have a prayer chain which enables us to pass on emergency prayer requests by phone. Singing Group Our Singing Group introduces some of the more modern worship, praise and meditative songs for the congregation at Southlands. The group usually meets fortnightly for practices on Mondays at 18:30. We have recently appointed a good pianist to help this group and join the church rota of pianists and organists - for a fee. There were eight applications for the job. Social activities A programme of social activities and events takes place at various times through the year, ranging from church lunches to concerts. They are arranged by our Events Group. The most recent was our church birthday party and ceilidh on Saturday, 19th November, although the Events Group and the Catering Team were both heavily involved with our Christmas Festival over the first two weekends of December. Walking Group The Southlands Walkers go out walking fortnightly on Thursdays from April to October and the group's leaders plan a wide variety of walks, usually for distances of four or five miles. The group also attempts some walks during the winter months. Women The details of the programme for the Southlands Fellowship Group, which meets on Mondays at 14:30 from September to April, are now in a separate folder Young adults Our young adults group, FLAME, meets every Tuesday evening at the home of David and Naomi Whittaker, 104 Bishopthorpe Road, for Bible study and social activities. The group aims to cater for the needs of students who live in the area as well as for young adults up to the age of 35. NOTE: This page was checked and updated on 12th January, 2012. |
