Church groupsActivities on offer THE church caters for a wide variety of tastes through the various groups it runs at Southlands and gradually this page will be split into a series of pages giving more details about our groups and what goes on. Badminton Club The Badminton Club meets in the Community Centre on Mondays from 7.30pm, resuming on September 6 after the summer break. Banner Group The Banner Group meets fortnightly on Thursdays from 10.00am and helps to inspire our worship through the banners and lectern falls it produces, though currently it is looking for new members - needleworkers and designers. Bible study There are two Bible study groups - one open group meets fortnightly in Room 1 at the church on Wednesday mornings (from 10.45am) from October to May; and the other, FLAME, for our young adults, meets at the home of David and Naomi Whittaker, at 104 Bishopthorpe Road, every week on Tuesdays from 7.30pm, resuming on September 7 after the summer break. We also support and host study courses arranged by Churches Together in South West York, particularly during Lent and Advent. Members of our congregation are encouraged to buy and use Bible reading notes available from the church bookstall. Film Club The Film Club arranges film shows in the church on occasional Saturday afternoons or evenings, depending on whether they are for children or adults. Prayer Concern is a half-hour meeting for prayer which takes place every week on Wednesday from 10.00am, using Room 1 at the church. Members of our congregation are encouraged to use the Methodist Prayer Handbook, which can be purchased in August from Mary Shaw. In addition we produce a monthly prayer calendar which is given out with the church notice sheet on the last Sunday of the preceding month. We also have a couple of prayer chains with emergency prayer requests being passed along by phone. Singing Group Our Singing Group introduces some of the more modern worship, praise and meditative songs for the congregation at Southlands. The group usually meets fortnightly on Mondays at 6.30pm for practices held in the church, but this month will meet only on Monday, August 16. In September there will be practices on rge 13th and the 27th. Social activities A programme of social activities and events takes place at various times through the year, ranging from church lunches to concerts. They are generally arranged by our Fundraising Group, but not all of them are intended to be fundraising activities. Walking Group The Southlands Walkers go out walking fortnightly on Thursdays from April to October and the groups leaders plan a wide variety of walks, usually for distances of four or five miles. On August 5 our walkers will be walking in the Ampleforth area and on August 19 they will go to Thruscross Reservoir. Women The Southlands Fellowship meets weekly on Mondays (2.30pm to 3.30pm), from October to April in Room 1 at the church. The minister usually speaks at the first meeting each month and outside speakers are invited on the other dates to talk about a wide variety of topics. The Fellowship also supports the work of Network at circuit, district and national levels. Several members went to Barlby on Friday, June 18, for a District Network Summer Evening Young adults Our young adults group , FLAME, meets every Tuesday evening at the home of David and Naomi Whittaker, 104 Bishopthorpe Road, for Bible study and social activities. The group has grown considerably over the past 12 months, drawing in some of the many students who live in the area as well as young adults up to the age of 35. They will next meet on Tuesday, September 7, after the summer break NOTE: This page was checked and updated on August 1, 2010. |
