Christmas services at Southlands
|
Busy Christmas at Southlands AFTER another successful Christmas Festival exhibition of displays based on the A-Z of Christmas, Southlands is now ready for a series of Christmas services. The first, a Youth Carol Service, took place on Thursday, December 15, with contributions – mainly drama and music - by Brownies, Guides, and Cub Scouts. There was also a Junior Club-style quiz focussing on Christmas carols and Dramadaries leaders Kath Weston and Bob Lawrence involved the audience in a piece of drama entitled Round The Back. On Sunday, December 18, the 10.30am service included a children’s Nativity tableau, plus a couple of sketches requested by preacher Angela Storer and a piece of video. The 6.30pm service took the form of a Candlelit Carol Service arranged jointly by a group representing the stewards and the minister and built round three sketches written by a member of the congregation. On Tuesday, December 20, Christmas got messy with a Mini Messy Christmas event at Southlands, which included a range of messy activities, food, fun and worship for the whole family arranged by a Messy Church team representing Southlands and the church of St Chad on the Knavesmire. A "nice" Nativity scene was corrected with the use of hay and straw, raisins to represent animal droppings, and tomato sauce for blood on Mary's clothing. On Wednesday, December 21, Southlands held a quieter, more reflective type of Christmas service, enabling people to take a break from the hustle and bustle of the season. A Christmas Eve midnight communion service took place on December 24, starting at 11.30pm, and on Christmas Day minister Jennifer McKenzie tried out a scooter - one of a number of presents brought along to our family Christmas service by the recipients.
