Southlands celebrates Bible anniversary
|
Southlands holds Biblefresh Week SOUTHLANDS put on a Biblefresh week in June to mark the 400th anniversary of the King James Version of the Bible. The aim of Biblefresh is to encourage more people to read and talk about the Bible, whether it’s the Authorised Version, Good News, the New International Version, the Contemporary English Version or some other version or translation. The Southlands Biblefresh Week included an exhibition featuring Bible translations before and after King James and various other materials associated with the Bible. This was open to the public from 10.00am to 5.00pm, while church steward Bob Lawrence and other members of the congregation attempted to carry out a public reading of the Bible, using the New International Version, at the lectern. By the end of the final day they had reached Proverbs 23:8 - although they had missed out Leviticus and Numbers. Two special evening events during the week – one on the Wednesday and the other on the Saturday were developed around a Bible topics version of the BBC Radio 4 panel game, Just A Minute, with panellists being allocated a minute to speak to a particular subject without repetition, hesitation and deviation. The Rev Graham Carter, former president of the Methodist Conference, took on the role of Nicholas Parsons on both nights and these turned out to be both entertaining and educational. Panellists included our own minister, circuit superintendent Jennifer McKenzie, the Rev Rachel Wood (Acomb and Lidgett Grove), Marian Smales (Holgate), Yvonne Wright (Heworth), Denis Wilson (Poppleton), York and Hull District Biblefresh Co-ordinator Ivan Pegg (Copmanthorpe), William Swires (Poppleton) and former Southlands member Tony Masinton - with a different panel for each evening. There was no charge either for admission to the exhibition or the evening events, but donations were welcomed for the work of the Bible Society and the Biblefresh project. |
